Ódor Tünde Enéh – THE DEEP
Made by: Renáta Ramocsai-Torma, art historian
Ódor Tünde Enéh’s THE DEEP explores the depths of human existence. In her paintings, we see the smallness of our subject from an almost transcendental perspective, but this feeling is not at all a message of fragility, but of the peace of a man who gets a peep of the Universe…
The central work of the project is the work Destino painted in 2020. It is the deep psychological insight into this painting that mostly makes the complexity of the other pieces in the planned exhibition perceptible and interpretable. This work, inspired by the pandemic of the year 2020, can be seen as a quintessential representation of the most intense period of separation in modern times. Since 2012, the sea has been the exclusive subject of Ódor Tünde Enéh’s art, but it is quite clear and easy to understand that these idyllic pictures are not just a profane documentation of the idyllic Mediterranean, but represent the Great Blue in her paintings, as a reflection of the Universe and as one of the primordial elements. On this peaceful surface of water, a tiny, shiny, snow-white boat will appear in 2020, which the artist calls a “soul core” and which we have never seen before in her paintings. Where can we escape to when the perceived safe dimension disappears? Is it even worth hoping for protection from the outside world, or should we look for the dimension that has always been in, but the outside world has overflowed its existence? The depiction of the fishing boat (synonymous with the human soul) without oar blades as a symbol of total abandonment and emptiness suggests a profound and important psychological experience; recognising the intrinsical laws of existence, there is no longer a struggle against the forces of the Universe. The other paintings in the competition project give space to this profound experience, involving the viewer in the truth only just perceived.
In the context of Ódor Tünde Enéh’s THE DEEP competition project, it is essential to mention the intellectual work of British-Indian conceptual artist Anish Kapoor. It was at the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1990 that the young artist first encountered the Indian-born artist’s extraordinary work, where she was astonished to see how Kapoor brought to life his idea of transporting the viewer into a mystical world without boundaries. Ódor Tünde Enéh’s main artistic ambition prior to this Biennale was to depict the Infinite as identical with the Universe, but Kapoor’s works gave technical proof that all these ambitions are feasible, and the effect is dramatic. Kapoor’s “Sky Mirror” sculptures can be compared to Ódor Tünde Enéh’s latest series “Metamorphosis”, which is also included in the competition project. The here and now, the near and far, the infinity of the Universe merges for both artists, the special dimension of illusion becomes reality within ourselves.
13.06.2025. Jelsa – M’ISLAND solo exhibition – opening speech
Made by: Željana Slaviček artist and art teacher
“Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends of art,
Welcome to the opening of this exceptional watercolor exhibition, with which we celebrate the work of academic painter Odor Tunde Eneh tonight. She has presented her work in oil paintings at more than 50 solo and group exhibitions across Europe over the past 30 years in France, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary and here in Croatia.
A few years ago, she began to work on the watercolor painting technique. Each new technique brings new enrichments to her research.
Watercolor is a technique that does not forgive mistakes – it requires a sure hand, patience, but also courage. It is with this language, gentle, airy and at the same time strong, that our artist expresses deep emotions, landscapes of inner states and quiet moments of everyday life that we often neglect.
I had the honor of watching her paint and the first thing I noticed was that she does not make preparatory sketches, but she – because of her inner talent and her experience – just works with brush and colours. This is the hallmark of great artists.
The works that you will have the opportunity to see tonight are not just depictions of the world around us – they are an invitation to slow down, look more carefully and feel more. The works are inspired by island life, old stone houses, local scenes of life flooded with blue-green tones of colors in which the artist finds inspiration.
She began her journey around the island 13 years ago at an art camp and since then she has constantly returned to the island dreaming of a real life. The dream slowly turned into reality. She planned and created the concept of her current artistic work, giving it the name “TerraMare”, inspired by the island surrounded by the sea. In 2022, she sold her house in Budapest and moved to Jelsa with her daughter and started the business.
TerraMare has now become a multifaceted art entity that, in addition to its international presence, enriches local cultural life, too.
Thank you for that, dear Tunde, for sharing your world of colours and light with us.
I open the exhibition. Enjoy!
Thank you.”
